19 NYC School Employees Test Favorable For Coronavirus – New York City City, NY Patch

NEW YORK CITY– At least 19 New York City school employees evaluated favorable for coronavirus in teachers’ very first week back to class, authorities stated.

Murmurs about COVID-19 cases in city schools spread for a minimum of a day before education authorities validated the rumors Friday afternoon.

A Bronx school– P.S. 811X The Academy for Profession and Living Skill– will be closed for a minimum of 24 hours under a safety protocol triggered by 2 validated cases within the building, authorities stated.

Other schools had a single employee each test favorable for the virus, bringing the total of buildings affected to 18.

“As we prepare yourself for in-person learning, we’ll stop at nothing to ensure principals, teachers and school staff have the protections they need to stay safe and prepare for the academic year,” stated Miranda Barbot, a city schools representative, in a statement. “While we continue to navigate the truths of a pandemic, there will be favorable cases– we are putting people’s health above whatever else by quickly recognizing and separating favorable cases, which is a leading effort to prevent transmission.”

Barbot didn’t offer a list of buildings affected, in spite of Patch’s request.

Teachers and many school staff returned to buildings and class today to prepare for the return of in-person classes on Sept. 21.

The return to class during the coronavirus is extraordinary for school district the size of New York City’s, and hasn’t been without debate or safety issues.

Those issues simmered all week as some teachers union members spread word about favorable coronavirus cases.

The Motion of Rank and File Educators, a branch of the United Federation of Teachers, raised particularly singing issues online.

“#notuntilitssafe,” the group affixed to a tweet about the favorable COVID-19 cases.
