Falling in love with the Big Apple was easy for Cate Ortiz and her hubby, who moved from California to a two-bedroom home on the Upper East Side last August.

“Long term, it’s just so costly. The rent is costly. Day care there was gon na cost more than our rent expense and it just wasn’t worth it for us,” Ortiz stated. “We’re paying through February. That’s how bad we wanted to leave the city,” Ortiz stated.

According to StreetEasy, more than 67,000 leasings were on the marketplace in July, with the average asking rent at $3,200, a nearly 9% drop from last July. DeAngelis was informed some tenants have been able to work out with landlords to decrease their existing rent.

“It makes sense to come to sort of a medium point that works for both parties versus having a tenant move out and then having the vacancy and attempting to fill the vacancy at a time when there’s a lot of option for tenants,” stated Nicole Beauchamp, an agent for Engel & & Volkers Property.

Beauchamp described the best technique for tenants looking for a break.
